Iris Calder

Contributing editor · writing for the Review since No. 2

Writes about how work gets made, and edits the Notebook section. Before the Review she edited trade books for nine years.

I.About Iris

Iris Calder grew up above her parents' print shop in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she learned to proofread by reading wedding invitations backward.Reading backward, word by word, stops you reading for sense, so the typos show. She still does it with every final proof. She edited nonfiction for a trade publisher for nine years before joining the Review in its second issue.

Her series On revision, which began in No. 13, follows a year of her own drafts and the editors who taught her to cut. She is turning it into a short book, due in 2027. She lives in Providence and answers letters on Fridays.
