A membership pays for the magazine and gives you all of it

Every issue the morning it's out, fourteen issues of archive, audio read by the people who wrote it, and three free reads a month to send to friends.

Members see the notes, sources and corrections on every piece, in the margin where they belong.

I.What's included

Six things a membership gets you, none of which is an ad-free version of something with ads.

  • Every issue, the day it's out

All six pieces of each issue online on publication morning, three weeks before the printed copies reach the shops.

  • The whole archive

Fourteen issues and 176 Saturday letters, searchable by writer, subject and year, with every correction dated.

    Browse the archive
  • Read aloud by the writers

An audio edition of every essay and interview, recorded by the person who wrote it, with the notes read at the end.

  • Three gift reads a month

Send any piece to anyone. The link works for 14 days and asks for nothing in return, not even an email.

  • Pages made to print

Print any piece at home and the sidenotes print in the margin, the way they were written to be read.

  • Letters to the editor

Members can reply to any piece. We print the best letters in each issue and answer the rest ourselves.

II.Pages that read like pages

We set every piece for long reading, on a phone or a desk.

A line of about sixty-six characters is the length people read fastest and lose their place least, so that's the width of every essay here, at any screen size.On a phone the line gets shorter, never smaller: the text stays at 18px or larger. Notes sit beside the line that calls them instead of at the bottom of a long page, and on a phone they open where you are with a tap.

The type is Newsreader, drawn for reading on screens, with headlines cut from the same family at a larger optical size. Everything you click is set in Hanken Grotesk, so text and interface never get confused. Both are open-source typefaces. The printed magazine uses the same two.

A feed address only you have. Paste it into a podcast app.

The Print plan adds the magazine by post. It's also on the shelf at these shops.

We print on uncoated paper and sew the spine, because a magazine about craft should survive being read in the bath.
